FOUNDING THE HIVE

I saw a gap in support and resources focused on creative women’s career growth…so I created my own.

About a year into my time at Amazon, I noticed a lack of opportunity to engage in conversation focused specifically on women’s career growth and challenges in the workplace.

I recognized the potential value in organizing a group to allow for women in creative roles to empower and support one another in discussing these challenges, setting goals, and sharing tools and techniques. To address this, I collaborated with a peer in developing ‘The Hive.’ This was a monthly, discussion-based event series and newsletter, focused on supporting women in creative roles in achieving their design, leadership, career and life goals.

Our mission: “By creating and fostering a safe place to talk openly about concerns and ideas, members can empower and support one another in growing into their design and leadership roles. Offering the tools and support necessary for creative women’s growth will encourage retention, growth into leadership positions, and involvement in the women in our design organization.”

My role —

  • Defined the group mission, vision, and success metrics to receive support and funding, and establish an organization-level goal.

  • Developed curriculum for a series of 6 monthly sessions. Topics covered ranged from stereotype threat to communication styles in the workplace.

  • Created and distributed a monthly newsletter with original and curated content to a 100+ person email alias.

  • Tracked and reported the group satisfaction rating, ensuring the content and format continued to be relevant and useful to participants.
